Body, I am Safe: A Somatic Ritual for Pain and Presence
Taking care of ourselves can sometimes feel overwhelming. Human Garage whom you can find on Instagram, shared a helpful idea for when we’re in physical pain:
Place your fingers gently on the area that hurts, focus there, and say:
“Body, I am safe. I’m okay with this.”
It’s a beautiful somatic cue — and one that aligns powerfully with my work, being hypnosis and EFT principles. The Human Garage approach is deeply in tune with the body’s need to feel acknowledged and included, rather than bypassed or pushed through.
Why the phrase works:
“Body, I am safe. I’m okay with this.”
…is deceptively simple, yet incredibly regulating. Here’s why:
1. It brings awareness to the site of tension or pain, often the part we try to avoid.
2. It affirms safety, which the nervous system needs to hear, especially when it’s on alert.
3. It introduces allowance — not resistance — which helps the body let go rather than brace.
The science behind it (neurologically and emotionally):
• Pain is often amplified when we resist it or feel unsafe.
• This gentle phrase bridges the conscious and subconscious mind, telling your inner protector:
“You don’t have to brace anymore. I’m not in danger.”
• It builds trust with the body, a crucial part of trauma integration.
Want to take it a step further?
Try this mini somatic touch ritual:
1. Gently place your fingertips on or near the area of discomfort (like the jaw, gum, or cheek) where the pain is focused.
2. Close your eyes and inhale slowly.
3. Say (out loud or silently):
“Body, I am safe. I’m okay with this.”
“You can soften. I’m here now.”
4. Stay for one more breath. Let the tension melt — or be noticed, without judgment.
Even 15 seconds of this can be transformational.
